Find duplicate transactions in Puzzle

How Puzzle flags possible duplicate transactions, how to find them in Close or from your AI assistant, and how to fix a real one.

Duplicate transactions inflate spend and throw off reconciliations. They usually come from a bank feed sending the same transaction twice, an account connected twice, or a manual import that overlaps a feed. Puzzle checks for possible duplicates automatically and can find them on request, in the app or from your AI assistant.

How Puzzle spots a possible duplicate

Puzzle flags transactions that share the same description, amount and date as Possible duplicate transactions. A flag is a prompt to review, not a verdict: two identical $3.00 transit fares on the same day can both be real.

Find duplicates in Close

Go to Close under AI Suite, click Add, and add the Transaction and vendor inconsistencies template. When you run it, the agent compares the month with each vendor's history and flags possible duplicate transactions alongside category, class and amount breaks and recurring vendors that are missing or appear more often than expected.

The same template is in Cowork under AI Suite.

In Chat, the Identify my top categorization issues prompt also scans for duplicates with similar vendors and amounts and ranks them with your other categorization issues by dollar impact.

Find duplicates from your AI assistant

With the Puzzle MCP connected, ask something like "Are there any duplicate transactions I should look at?" The assistant reads Puzzle's duplicate checks and shows you each pair: the description, amount, date and accounts involved. It can pair them with Puzzle's anomaly scan to give you one list to review.

Fixing a real duplicate

If a pair is a true duplicate, remove the extra transaction. See How to Delete / Remove a Transaction. If every transaction from one account is doubled, the account is probably connected twice: see How to merge bank accounts in Puzzle.
