Overview
Puzzle automatically connects transactions that represent the same movement of money across two different accounts — for example, a credit card payment showing up in both your bank account and your credit card account. These are called linked transactions.
This helps keep your books clean and prevents the same transaction from being counted twice.
How Linking Works
Puzzle looks at transaction amounts and dates across your connected accounts. When two transactions match — like a payment leaving your bank and a payment arriving on your credit card — Puzzle links them together automatically so they appear as one matched pair.
Transactions Not Linking Automatically?
If Puzzle isn't automatically linking two transactions you expect to be matched, check that both sides have the same vendor assigned. Puzzle uses vendor information as part of its matching logic, and a mismatch — even if the amounts and dates align — can prevent automatic linking.
To fix this:
Open each transaction individually
Confirm that the vendor field is set to the same vendor on both sides
Once the vendor matches, Puzzle should be able to link them
What If a Transaction Is Linked Incorrectly?
If you notice two transactions have been linked that shouldn't be, you can unlink them:
Open the linked transaction
Select the option to Unlink the transactions
Update the category on each transaction to reflect what it actually is
⚠️ Important: Once you unlink two transactions, they cannot be re-linked. There is no way to undo an unlink, so make sure you want to proceed before confirming.
Already Unlinked Something by Mistake?
Don't worry — you won't need to re-link them to fix it. Just make sure both transactions are categorized to the same account. The net effect on your books will be the same as if they were linked.
For example, if a bank transfer was unlinked, categorize both the outgoing and incoming transaction to Bank Transfers in Transit and they'll balance out correctly.
