Anomaly and fraud detection in Puzzle

Find transactions and journal entries worth a second look — first-time large vendors, round-dollar entries, off-hours postings — in Close or from your AI assistant.

Puzzle can review your books for transactions and journal entries that look unusual, such as a large payment to a vendor you've never paid before, a round-dollar entry with no memo, or a posting on a weekend, and tell you why each one was flagged. Findings are for you to review. Puzzle never changes your books because something looked unusual.

Run an anomaly review in Close

Go to Close under AI Suite, click Add, and add one of these templates to your checklist:

Template

What it flags

Journal entry review & anomaly detection

Round-dollar entries over $5,000 with no supporting reference, entries posted outside business hours, entries by people who don't usually post to that account, entries reversed within three days, and suspense or clearing accounts still open at period end. Each flag gets a risk reason, a severity (high, medium or low) and a recommended follow-up.

First time large transactions

Large payments to vendors that appear for the first time in the period.

Transaction and vendor inconsistencies

Breaks from each vendor's history: a different category or class, an amount outside the usual range, a recurring vendor that's missing or appears more often than usual, and possible duplicates.

Click Run, then Review when the task is Ready. Add a schedule to run it every month.

Close is available to accountants and firms that manage the company's books. In Cowork under AI Suite, you'll find First time large transactions and Transaction and vendor inconsistencies.

In Chat, the Anomaly detection analysis prompt reviews the last 60 days and summarizes findings by risk level in a table.

Find anomalies from your AI assistant

With the Puzzle MCP connected, ask something like "Check September for unusual transactions." The assistant runs Puzzle's anomaly scan, which compares the period against the company's own last 12 months and flags:

  • large payments to first-time vendors,

  • large entries in the last days of the period,

  • weekend and off-day postings, judged against how often the company normally posts on those days.

"Large" defaults to $2,500. Tell the assistant a different threshold if that's too low for your business. The assistant can also pull Puzzle's accuracy checks for possible duplicates and vendor or category inconsistencies.
