Overview

If you have a bank account that isn't supported by one of Puzzle's native integrations, you can set it up manually and import transactions via CSV to maintain a complete financial picture.

Before You Begin: Onboarding Without a Connected Bank

If you're in the onboarding flow and don't have a Plaid-connected bank account — or prefer to use a manual bank instead — you don't need to connect a bank to proceed.

On Step 1 of the onboarding flow, select Accountant/Bookkeeper to bypass the bank connection requirement and access Puzzle. You can then follow the steps below to set up your manual account.

Step 1: Create a Manual Bank Account

  1. Go to Integrations in the left side panel

  2. Click Add Connection

  3. Click the Manual accounts filter, then click Connect on Manual Bank & Credit Card

  4. Enter the Institution name, Account type, Account name and Account number (last 4 digits). There is no opening balance field.

  5. Click Continue, check the box to confirm the details are correct, then click Save. The account name, type and number can't be changed after you save.

💡 The account name will appear across Puzzle in reports and transaction pages, so choose something easy to identify.

Step 2: Import Bank Transactions via CSV

  1. Go to Accounting → Transactions → Bank & credit cards

  2. Click the green + button on the right side of the page

  3. In the Add transactions pop-up, choose Upload .csv file and select the manual account you just created under Post to account

  4. Click Download template to get the CSV template (also available here — click Make a Copy)

  5. Fill in your transactions — required fields are:

    • Date (YYYY-MM-DD recommended. Many other formats work too, including YYYY/MM/DD, MM/DD/YYYY, M/D/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, M-D-YYYY, MMM DD YYYY and MMM D YYYY)

    • Amount (no commas or dollar signs; use a negative number for money out)

    • Description

  6. Delete the example/instruction rows from the template

  7. Download the completed sheet as a CSV file

  8. Upload the CSV into Puzzle and click Post transactions. We recommend up to 150 transactions per file. This is a recommendation, not a hard limit.

For the full column reference, see How to Manually Add Transactions in Puzzle.

Step 3: Import Payroll Transactions (if applicable)

If your manual account is a payroll account:

  1. Navigate to the Payroll page

  2. Select Create a Payroll Manually

  3. Under payroll provider, select the manual account you created in Step 1

  4. Complete the payroll entry as needed
