Step 1: Split the Transaction First
Before you can assign classes or departments, you need to split the transaction into its individual line items.
Open the transaction you want to split
Use the Split option to divide the amount across however many line items you need
Add a description to each split line — this is required before you can save
Assign the appropriate category to each line if they differ
Assign the vendor to each split line (the vendor field refers to the actual contractor or company you paid — not the project)
💡 Once you save the split, the vendor and classification fields move from the top-level transaction down to each individual split line. This is expected — Puzzle is now treating each split as its own transaction.
Step 2: Add Class or Department to Each Split
Once the splits are saved, the classification fields will appear on each individual line item. From here:
Click into each split line
Assign the relevant class (e.g. project, department, or cost center) to each one
Repeat for all splits
You can assign different classes to each line, so a single transaction can be tracked across multiple projects simultaneously.
Step 3: Review and Finalize
Before finalizing, you can toggle on the Classes view to see a full breakdown and confirm everything is tagged correctly. Once you're happy with the splits and classifications, hit Finalize.
Quick Tips
Always split before classifying. The classification fields won't appear at the line-item level until after the split is saved.
Descriptions are required on each split line — you won't be able to save without them.
The vendor field is for the person or company you paid, not the project name. Use the classification/class field for project tracking.
If a vendor doesn't appear in the dropdown, you can type their name to search or add them on the spot.
