Why Isn't All My Historical Bank Data Syncing? (Plaid Data Limitations by Bank)

Some banks only let Plaid pull back a limited window of transaction history — regardless of what Puzzle requests. This article breaks down known limits by bank and what to do if you need older data.

Why Is My Historical Data Missing?

When you connect a bank account via Plaid, Puzzle requests as much transaction history as possible (typically up to 24 months, per Plaid's own documentation).

However, Plaid can only pull what the bank itself exposes through its own online banking portal — this is a limitation set by the bank, not by Puzzle or Plaid.

That means two accounts connected the same way, at the same time, can come in with very different amounts of history depending on which bank they're with.

The History Window Is Locked at First Connection

The amount of history pulled in is set the moment an account is first connected, and by default that's just 90 days unless more is requested (see Plaid's explanation of why an Item may only include three months of history). It cannot be extended retroactively just by waiting or refreshing.

⚠️ Important: updating the ingestion date only helps if the bank still exposes that older data. If your bank's own limitation is shorter than the date you're requesting (e.g. Capital One's 90-day cap), moving the date back will not retrieve more than the bank makes available.

Known Historical Data Limits by Bank

These limits come from Plaid's own documentation and support center where available, and from banks' public FAQs otherwise. Actual results can vary and are ultimately controlled by the bank.

What to Do If You Need More History Than Your Bank Provides

Common Questions

Q: Why isn't all my data syncing from my bank?
A: Your bank likely has a shorter history window available through Plaid than the 24 months Puzzle requests. See the table above for known limits.

Q: Why does my Capital One account only show 90 days of transactions?
A: This is a hard limit on Capital One's side — Plaid cannot return more than 90 days for Capital One accounts no matter what is requested, even though Capital One's own website shows up to 2 years when you log in directly.

Q: Can I get more than 18 months of history for my Bank of America account?
A: Not for checking, savings, or mortgage accounts — 18 months is the bank's own ceiling. Credit cards are limited by statement cycles instead (11 or 17 prior cycles depending on account type).

Q: I updated my ingestion start date but the older transactions still aren't showing up. Why?
A: This usually means the bank itself doesn't have the data that far back, so there's nothing further Plaid can pull. Check the table above for your bank's known limit.

Q: Will resyncing or reconnecting my account get me more history?
A: No. The history window is set the first time an account is connected and is capped by both Plaid's 24-month maximum and whatever your specific bank allows. Reconnecting doesn't bypass the bank's own limit.
