How to Bulk Import Manual Journal Entries via CSV

Step-by-step guide to bulk importing manual journal entries via CSV — including downloading the template, selecting cash vs. accrual basis, and validating your file before import.

Written by Michael Herchen

Need to post more than one manual journal entry at a time? Instead of adding them one by one, you can upload a batch of entries all at once using Puzzle's CSV import template.

Follow the steps below to import your manual journal entries.

1) Open the CSV import

Navigate to Accounting and then click Manual Journal Entries.

Click the small arrow next to + Add journal entry, then select Import from CSV.

2) Download the template

In the Import manual journal entries window, click Download template to grab the CSV in the required format.

3) Fill out the template

Open the template and enter your journal entries, following the instructions on the guidance tab. The guidance tab walks you through each column so your entries import cleanly.

📓 Tip: Keep your entries in the exact format shown in the template. This helps everything pass validation on the first try.

4) Choose your view

Back in the import window, use the Select view dropdown to choose whether you're importing on a cash basis or an accrual basis. Make sure this matches how you intend the entries to be recorded.

5) Upload your file

Drag and drop your completed CSV into the upload area, or click Browse my computer to select it.

6) Validate and import

Puzzle will run your file through Validation (Step 2) to catch any errors before anything is posted. Once your entries pass, continue to Import (Step 3) to finish.

That's it — your journal entries will be posted in bulk.

A few things to note:

🌟 You can review past imports anytime by clicking History in the bottom-left of the import window.

🔴 Just like manually entered journal entries, imported entries cannot be deleted once posted — only voided. This preserves a complete log for future review.
