MCP connection troubleshooting

Fixes for common problems connecting Claude, ChatGPT or other AI tools to Puzzle with MCP: the "Read company data" screen, missing write tools, and tools that refuse to run.

For setup steps, see API and MCP Access in Puzzle.

The consent screen says "Read company data"

That screen means you connected to Puzzle's partner API, not the MCP connection.

  1. Remove the connection from your AI tool, and from Settings → Connected apps in Puzzle.

  2. Add a new connector using https://app.puzzle.io/mcp as the URL.

Write tools are missing

Check these, in order:

  • You're on the partner API. If your consent screen said "Read company data", reconnect with the /mcp URL as described above.

  • Your company is on a free plan past its cutoff date. After the cutoff date, unpaid companies only get a reduced set of tools. Upgrading from Settings → Billing restores the full set.

Tools refuse to run for a company

If AI features are turned off for a company, its tools won't run until someone at that company turns them on in Settings → AI accounting.
