Overview
When you close a CD and move the funds to your checking account, you'll need to record this manually in Puzzle using two offsetting transfer entries through the Bank Transfers in Transit Clearing account. Together, these entries net out to zero and accurately reflect the movement of funds.
Step 1: Record the Transfer Out of the CD
Go to Transactions → Banking & Credit Card
Click the green + button and select Add Individually
Select your CD account
Enter the date the CD was closed
Enter the amount as a negative (e.g. -$10,000)
Add a description such as "Close out CD"
Set the category to Bank Transfers in Transit Clearing
Click Post
Step 2: Record the Transfer Into the Checking Account
Click the green + button again and select Add Individually
Select your checking account
Enter the same date as Step 1
Enter the same amount as a positive (e.g. +$10,000)
Add a description such as "Transfer from closed CD"
Set the category to Bank Transfers in Transit Clearing
Click Post
How It Works
The two entries offset each other, netting to zero in the clearing account
The CD balance is reduced to zero
The funds are reflected as received in the checking account
Already Have the Deposit in Your Checking Account?
If the deposit into your checking account was already automatically imported and categorized, you only need to complete Step 1 — the negative entry out of the CD. Make sure the amount and date align with the existing deposit in your checking account.
