Step 1: Ensure Vendors Are Applied to Transactions
Puzzle automatically populates the Vendor/Customer field for each transaction via your bank feed and bills.
If a transaction comes in without a vendor, filter your transactions to the “No Vendor” list to apply vendors manually.
Transactions without a vendor will not appear in your final 1099 report.
💡 Tip: Vendor fields are required on bills, so all bills in Puzzle will automatically include a vendor.
Step 2: Review and Manage Your Vendor List
You can view your complete list of vendors under Expenses → Vendors.
From this page, you can:
View all existing vendors.
Open Vendor Details by clicking a vendor’s row.
Toggle 1099 Eligibility to mark whether that vendor should be included in 1099 reporting.
Record additional tax-related information and attach supporting documents (e.g., W-9 forms).
Step 3: Identify 1099-Eligible Vendors
Puzzle helps automate this process by suggesting vendors that meet common 1099 criteria:
Vendors with total payments over $600, and
Spending in categories typical for 1099 vendors (e.g., contractors, freelancers, professional services).
You can review these suggested vendors directly in the Vendors tab and confirm eligibility as needed.
Step 4: Export Your 1099 Vendor Report
Once you’ve reviewed and finalized your vendor list:
Go to the Vendors tab.
Review the vendors marked as 1099-eligible.
Export a 1099 template that includes:
Each eligible vendor, and
The total amount spent with each vendor during the year.
This export can be used directly as input for your 1099 filings.
Summary
By ensuring all transactions have vendors, marking 1099 eligibility, and exporting your vendor list, Puzzle makes it simple to prepare for 1099 reporting—no manual spreadsheets required.
