Overview of Trial Balance Types in Puzzle

Written by Michael Herchen

Puzzle provides multiple types of Trial Balances to cater to different financial reporting needs:

  1. Tax Package Trial Balance (TB): This is a cumulative view of all financial data across all time. It does not automatically close year-end P&L balances to Retained Earnings, which means it may combine prior-year and current-year P&L balances. As a result, this Trial Balance may not align with single-year P&L or Balance Sheet figures.

  2. FS Trial Balance: This version of the Trial Balance aligns with the financial statements for a specific period. It reflects the financial data for the selected period rather than showing an all-time cumulative balance.

Cumulative vs. Period-Specific Trial Balances

The key difference between the Tax Package TB and the FS Trial Balance lies in their scope:

  • Cumulative View (Tax Package TB): Includes all financial data from the beginning of time, which can lead to discrepancies when comparing it to single-year financial statements.

  • Period-Specific View (FS Trial Balance): Focuses on financial data for a selected period, ensuring alignment with the P&L and Balance Sheet for that period.

Understanding this distinction is crucial for accurate financial reporting and analysis.
