How to Set a Ledger Start Date to Remove Historical Data

Set a Ledger Start Date (Cutoff Date) in Puzzle to remove all data before a specific date and begin accounting activity from a clean starting point.

Written by Michael Herchen

What does this do?

Setting a Ledger Start Date creates a cutoff point in Puzzle. Any historical activity before that date will be removed, and Puzzle will only keep and track data from the Ledger Start Date forward.

This is useful when you want to:

  • start fresh from a new accounting period, or

  • load balances as of a specific date without keeping older transactions

Important Note

⚠️ Setting a Ledger Start Date will remove all historical data prior to that date.

When should I use it?

You should use a Ledger Start Date when you want to:

  • remove old historical data from Puzzle

  • restart cleanly beginning in a new month, quarter, or year

  • bring in starting balances as of a specific date and only track new activity moving forward

  • correct a setup where too much historical data was imported

How to set the Ledger Start Date

(Note: If you have any MJEs, you'll need to void them before doing this process)

  1. Go to Settings > Company > Historical Books

  2. Locate Ledger Start Date

  3. Enter the date you want Puzzle to begin tracking activity from

Example

If you’re bringing in data as of 12/31/2024, your cutoff should begin the next day:

  • Historical ledger end date: 12/31/2024

  • Ledger start date: 01/01/2025

This cutover point allows you to book historical entries up through your historical end date, and then begin new activity starting from your ledger start date.
